Tutorial - 30 Min
How do current regulatory frameworks worldwide create an obligation for algorithm-based services to boost journalism vs. dis-/misinformation?
What will participants gain from attending this session? — ISO standard and the news publishing industry: how it is meant to be used by newsrooms and what everyone else (tech companies, programmatic advertising, funders, fact checkers, etc.) is expected to do with it.
— How the JTI standard is designed to feed algorithms.
— Policy frameworks in which the JTI standard is mentioned (Digital Services Act's Code of Conduct of the European Commission, the European Media Freedom Act, etc.)
— Use cases of tech companies making use of the JTI standard: NewsGuard with the JTI Emergency Protocol launched in May 2023 in Ukraine; Microsoft's tech tools for journalism as part of their recently launched Journalism Hub; Internews' Ads For News and GroupM's Back to News initiatives.
Description:
One way to look at the many existing approaches designed to detox our information space can be done by grouping these in 2 different categories: ex ante remedies (self-regulation, standards, media audit, etc.) and ex post remedies (labelling, moderation, fact checking, etc.).
One way to consolidate all the different approaches and to, ultimately, boost journalism is to unify the news publishing industry with one common denominator: an ISO standard. ISO standards are designed to promote and reward the quality of services, products and processes.
In the case of the news publishing industry, the Journalism Trust Initiative is the name that was given to an ISO-type standard that promotes transparency of news outlets, guarantees of editorial independence and the professionalism of fundamental editorial processes.
Following this session, it is expected that:
- policymakers engage with our advocacy team to understand how the JTI standard should be used in their country;
- a working group with the private sector be created to start enabling this market-driven approach;
- publications and media impact is generated.
Hybrid Format: The session will be structured as follows:
— 20 min to present our topic and achievements;
— 20 min of Q&A, using https://www.slido.com/ or similar tool to collect questions from the online audience
— 20 min to detail current use cases and to call for ideas from each participant on how they/their country/their industry can get involved.
